IPE-TM-700 Metallurgy
IPE-TM-700-07
This procedure describes the information that is required to complete a Material Selection Diagram (MSD). This procedure applies to all technology centers across Inflection Point Engineering.
2.1 Generation of an MSD shall conform to the requirements of Procedure
2.2 The following information shall be provided on the MSD by the Design Engineer or designate (any MSDs not displaying all of the required information will be returned to the Design Engineer for rework):
a. Maximum operating temperatures
b. Equipment design pressures and temperatures, including minimum design metal temperature
c. Design H2 partial pressure (Design Pressure x mole fraction H2 in vapor phase)
d. Mol percent H2S in total stream
e. Weight percent or weight ppm S in liquid phase
f. (a “Y” or “N” must be indicated for all lines in the Stream Data Summary as well as each piece of equipment – including both shell and tube sides of exchangers). If no equipment is in wet H2S service, the following general note may be applied in lieu of filling in the individual boxes: “No piping or equipment meets the NACE MR0103 definition of wet sour service.”
g. Provide separate boxes for each operating case (i.e., sulfiding, hydrogen stripping, etc). Each case shall indicate any deviation in design or operating conditions from the normal operating case, including but not limited to: design temperature, H2PP, sulfur level, maximum operating temperature, other corrosives, etc. See example below:
Additionally, the frequency and duration of each case shall be indicated either on the MSD or in a separate email.
h. CO2 and water partial pressures and dew point (where applicable, e.g, Selexol, Ecofining, Amine Treater, FCC, etc.)
i. Caustic concentration, if applicable, equipment and streams.
j. For hydrotreating, Unionfining and Unicracking:
k. For Crude and Vacuum units:
l. List type, concentration, and location of any acids used or produced in the process.
m. Amine type and concentration for absorbers and strippers; amine solution loading (mol acid gas/mol amine) for lean and rich solutions
n. For heat exchangers:
o. For heat exchangers with multiple exchanger shells operating over 400°F:
p. For process water streams in BEDQ:
q. The following information shall be provided with the MSD:
2.3 For REVAMPS: all piping and equipment shall be included on the MSD with all applicable information from 2.2 if available
Each equipment shall have one of three designations labeled at the top of the equipment box:
1. Existing – for existing equipment with unchanged design and operating conditions (unaffected by new case). Existing metallurgy shall be shown in both MSD box and Stream Data Summary.
2. Revamp – for existing equipment with changed design and/or operating conditions (affected by new case). Existing metallurgy shall be shown in both MSD box and Stream Data Summary.
3 New – for new equipment.
