Low Pressure Vessel Vent and Purge System

IPE-TM-600-02

1. Purpose

This procedure establishes the recommended guideline for selecting the vent line size, purge system restriction orifice bore diameter and purge gas rate for a vessel that floats on the relief header.

2. Procedure

2.1 Calculate the vessel vent rate using the following procedure (all dimensions are in feet).

Horizontal vessel

Vent rate, scfh = (Tangent Length) * (Diameter) * (Float Length) * (0.1) * (4)

Vertical vessel

Vent rate, scfh = (cross-sectional area, ft2) * (Float Length) * (0.1) * (4)

2.2 Based upon the calculated vent rate, select the vent line size, restriction orifice bore, and purge gas rate from the following table.

Note: Purge gas rate is based upon nitrogen with a restriction orifice (RO) P of 11 psi (12 psig inlet, 1 psig outlet).

3. Calculation Basis

3.1 The vessel vent rate calculation is based upon the procedure defined in Procedure PSD-106-01 “Project Specification 106 – Chemicals Nitrogen and Hydrogen Specifications”.

3.2 The vent rate vs vent line size relationship is based upon a maximum vent line velocity of 2.5 ft/sec.

3.3 The vent line vs restriction orifice bore diameters were established to minimize purge gas consumption, and will generally produce vent line velocities of 0.7 to 1.5 ft/sec.

4. Special Considerations

4.1 When nitrogen is used for startup/shutdown operation, size the nitrogen supply line, bypass line, and the line downstream of the bypass line junction for the startup/shutdown operation.

4.2 The nitrogen purge rate and vent line size shall not be influenced by the pumpout rate. Design the vessel for either full vacuum or an alternate method of protection provided.

4.3 This procedure does not size the vent line for fire case relief. It is assumed that a PSV has been provided. If the vent line is to be sized for fire case relief, follow the appropriate calculation procedure.

4.4 Each installation shall require a “Y” type strainer, with 30 mesh stainless steel screen (note: the mesh size will be the same for RO bores 1/16” thru 1/4”). The strainer(s) shall be specified in Project Specification 806.
