Solenoid Valves
IPE Engineering Practice IPE-EP-12-1-22
Document number: IPE-EP-12-1-22 · Section: 12 — Instruments and Controls
SCOPE
- This Practice covers the detail requirements for the selection of solenoid valves.
- Solenoid valves shall be supplied in strict accordance with EP 12-1-22 DS, this Practice, and the referenced standards and publications
- Where special features or specifications are required as determined by the Owner, or Owner’s Engineer, these shall be specified on the Data Sheet and shall be adhered to by the vendor.
- Any deviation from this Practice must be approved by the procedure described in EP 1–1–3.
- A revision bar indicates all changes made to this Revision.
2.0 REFERENCES
The following codes and standards shall be considered as part of this Practice. All documents shall be the latest editions in force on the date of issuance of this Practice.
STANDARDS AND PUBLICATIONS
DEFINITIONS
- Contractor - Company or business that agrees to furnish materials or perform specified services at a specified price and/or rate to the Owner.
- Electrically Tripped - Manually move the lever to the latched position with the solenoid de– energized. Trips when the solenoid is energized.
- Free Handle - Solenoid shall be energized before lever can engage and be manually moved to the latched position. Will trip instantly when solenoid is de–energized.
- Inspector - A Inflection Point Engineering, LLC appointed engineer or inspector.
- Manufacturer - The recipient of a direct or indirect purchase order for materials and/or equipment. In this context, a direct order is one issued to a manufacturer by a contractor or the Owner. An indirect order is one issued to a manufacturer by a vendor (recipient of a direct order) for materials, fabricated components, or subassemblies.
- No Voltage Release - Manually move the lever to the latched position with the solenoid energized. Trips when the solenoid is de–energized.
- Owner - Inflection Point Engineering, LLC.
- Owner’s Engineer - A Inflection Point Engineering, LLC appointed engineer.
- Purchaser - The party placing a direct purchase order. The purchaser is the Owner’s designated representative.
- Three Way Solenoid Valves: Normally Closed - Applies pressure when solenoid is energized; exhaust pressure when solenoid is de–energized.
- Three Way Solenoid Valves: Normally Open - Applies pressure when solenoid is de–energized; exhaust pressure when solenoid is energized.
- Three Way Solenoid Valves: Universal - Applies pressure when solenoid is de–energized; exhaust pressure when solenoid is energized.
- Vendor - Recipient of a direct purchase order.
DESIGN AND MATERIALS
- Solenoid valves shall be capable of passing the flow medium and quantity at the conditions specified on the Instrument Data Sheets.
- Solenoid valves shall be operated by an electromagnet single coil (solenoid) unless otherwise specified on the Data Sheet.
- As designated by the quantity of process connections, solenoid valves are identified as two, three, or four way solenoid valves.
- The valve wetted parts shall be of a material and rating suitable for the fluid, temperature and pressure identified on the Data Sheet. The manufacturer shall inform the purchaser of the suitability of the valve material and softgoods for the service specified. Brass bodies should be used for instrument air and plant air service. Stainless bodies should be used for hydrocarbon services.
- Valve body connections size shall be as specified on the instrument Data Sheet.
- Solenoid valves shall have sufficient capacity to handle the flows specified on the Data Sheet.
- Manual reset solenoid valves, when tipped, shall be manually reset to prevent inadvertent startup. Manually reset valves should be of the No Voltage or Free Handle design. Electrically tripped valves require approval of the Owner’s Engineer.
- Electrical enclosures should be NEMA 4 unless otherwise designated on the Data Sheet.
- Solenoid operating coils shall be of the molded or encapsulated type, which shall be waterproof and fungus proof.
- Solenoid shall be furnished with two 18” coil leads unless otherwise specified.
