Vacuum Vessel Design Considerations

Design Factor Vacuum (inHga) Consideration Action Required
Light Vacuum 1 - 5 Atmospheric pressure dominates Standard thicker wall
Medium Vacuum 5 - 20 Significant external load Stiffening rings/lugs
Deep Vacuum 20 - 27 High collapse risk Reinforced design/FEA
Ultra Vacuum 27+ Extreme loads Double wall construction

Buckling Analysis Required:

• For vacuum > 5 inHga and L/D > 3

• Use ASME Section VIII Division 2 for deep vacuum

• Consider stiffening ring spacing (L/D > 1.5)

• FEA recommended for vacuum > 15 inHga
