Field Operations Handbook
Chapter from the Field Operations Handbook.
Checkout is the systematic verification that all construction and maintenance work is complete, correct, and ready for operation. It proceeds from mechanical completion toward operational readiness.
Checkout Sequence:
1. Mechanical Completion Verification
• Walk every system: piping, equipment, instruments, electrical
• Verify all punchlist items closed or accepted
• Confirm all blinds removed per blind list
• Verify all spring hangers unblocked, expansion joints freed
2. Pressure Testing
• Hydrostatic test per applicable code (ASME B31.3, B31.1)
• Pneumatic test only where hydro is not feasible (higher risk)
• Hold time: minimum 10 minutes (30 minutes for critical systems)
• Inspect ALL flanges and connections under pressure
3. Flushing & Cleaning
• Chemical clean or water flush per system requirements
• Mill scale removal where required (see Metallurgy guide)
• Dry per spec (N2 purge, vacuum dry, or air dry)
4. Instrument Loop Checks
• 100% loop check: verify signal from field to DCS/SIS
• Calibrate all transmitters and switches
• Verify fail-safe direction on all control valves
• Test all safety interlocks end-to-end
5. Rotating Equipment Checks
• Motor rotation check (bump test)
• Alignment verification (laser preferred)
• Lube oil system flushed and filled
• Solo run: 4 hours minimum, monitor vibration and bearing temperature
