Ammonia Synthesis Loop Heat Duty

Reactor heat release, recycle compressor power, chiller duty, and specific energy for a Haber–Bosch synthesis loop. Based on ideal gas and fixed heat-of-reaction assumptions at loop conditions.

Method: Reaction N2 + 3 H2 → 2 NH3; reactor heat release from molar production rate and ΔHr at loop conditions. Recycle compressor power estimated from ΔP and gas mass flow at fixed efficiency. Chiller duty from recycle gas sensible cooling to separation temperature (Cp ≈ 3.5 kJ/kg·°C, reference 40 °C). Modern total synloop specific energy typically 0.6–0.8 kWh/kg NH3 (excluding H2 production).
